Coatings, paints and adhesives runs roughly $250-280B combined: paints and coatings account for $180-210B (2024-25, Grand View Research/Fortune Business Insights), adhesives and sealants a further $60-75B (Statista/Smithers). Growth of 3-5% a year tracks construction and auto-OEM output alongside consumer repaint cycles. The segment's most visible near-term AI application is not a pilot — AI-driven color-matching and on-demand formulation is already live at retail scale and starting to move into industrial production.
Asia-Pacific takes more than 45% of volume. Sherwin-Williams (US), PPG, AkzoNobel (Netherlands) and Nippon Paint (Japan) lead coatings revenue; Henkel and 3M, among others, lead adhesives. The top 5 coatings players hold roughly 35-40% of revenue, while adhesives fragment by application niche. Upstream, the segment draws resins, pigments and solvents from the bulk and specialty chemicals segments; downstream it sells into construction, auto OEM and refinish, and consumer DIY retail.
EBITDA runs 15-20%, held up by brand recognition and contractor-distribution relationships that new entrants find difficult to replicate. The recurring margin problem is a timing problem: titanium dioxide and resin costs move on their own cycle, pass-through pricing to customers lags those swings, and margins compress and expand with no reference to underlying demand. Because inputs come from the bulk and specialty segments, a coatings producer's margin resilience comes down to how quickly it can reprice contracts relative to how its upstream suppliers are pricing their own inputs.
AI color-matching is already standard in retail paint stores; the next step, AI-enabled formulation-on-demand at industrial scale, is expected within 2-5 years. Both attack the same structural cost — the large SKU catalogs and regional color-mixing infrastructure coatings companies have historically needed to serve custom and small-batch orders economically.
As formulation-on-demand matures, the advantage of having spent decades building extensive regional mixing infrastructure and a deep SKU catalog shrinks: a smaller competitor with strong AI-driven formulation capability can serve custom orders without replicating that physical footprint. Competitive weight shifts somewhat away from scale in physical distribution and toward the sophistication of the formulation software itself. Brand recognition and the contractor channel are a separate matter — AI does not directly address either, and they remain a durable source of advantage in this segment.
Adhesives get the same dynamic on a slower clock. Formulation for structural and industrial bonding applications carries longer qualification cycles than retail paint tinting, so AI-driven formulation speed pays where it shortens the path to customer requalification, not where it merely widens a color catalog. For producers serving industrial and OEM adhesive customers, the AI effect shows up first as faster new-formulation development timelines, not as a retail-style shift toward on-demand production.
