Avago Technologies – Broadcom (2015–2016)
Value: $37 billion, cash and stock, announced May 2015; closed February 2016.
Structure: Friendly, financed with roughly $20 billion in bridge debt underwritten by Silver Lake and banks. The combined company took the Broadcom name.
The thesis: Avago, itself a serial acquirer, said combining its RF and storage-connectivity chips with Broadcom's networking, broadband and set-top portfolio would create a diversified franchise with less exposure to any single end market and heavy cost overlap to cut.

Value: $32 billion cash, announced and completed within weeks in July–September 2016.
Structure: All-cash, friendly, take-private of a UK-listed company; SoftBank paid a roughly 43% premium to Arm's undisturbed share price.
The thesis: SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son called it a bet on the Internet of Things, arguing Arm's chip-design licensing model — embedded in the vast majority of the world's smartphones — would extend into billions of connected devices.

Marvell Technology – Cavium (2017–2018)
Value: Approximately $6 billion in cash and stock, announced November 2017, closed July 2018.
Structure: Mixed cash-and-stock, friendly; Cavium shareholders received $40 cash plus 2.1757 Marvell shares per share.
The thesis: Marvell said combining its storage and networking connectivity chips with Cavium's data-center, security and processor lines would create a top-tier infrastructure-semiconductor supplier able to compete for cloud and 5G build-outs.

Salesforce – Slack Technologies (2020–2021)
Value: $27.7 billion in cash and stock, announced December 2020, closed July 2021 — Salesforce's largest acquisition to date.

The thesis: Salesforce said Tableau's visual analytics platform would let it move from managing customer data to helping customers understand it, extending Salesforce's platform beyond CRM into broader business intelligence.

Value: SAP acquired Qualtrics for $8 billion cash in November 2018 (closed January 2019). SAP then IPO'd roughly 20% of Qualtrics on Nasdaq in January 2021 at an implied valuation near $15 billion, before selling its remaining majority stake in March 2023 as Qualtrics went private, in a deal valuing the whole company at $12.5 billion with Silver Lake and CPP Investments.
Structure: Original deal all-cash and friendly; the exit was a partial IPO followed by a full take-private, an unusual acquire-list-sell sequence for strategic software M&A.

Oracle – Cerner Corporation (2021–2022)
Value: $28.3 billion cash, announced December 2021, closed June 2022 — Oracle's largest acquisition ever, surpassing its 2016 purchase of NetSuite.

The thesis: Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook needed to own the leading standalone photo-sharing app to defend against mobile-native competitors as usage shifted from desktop to smartphones.

Value: Announced at $19 billion (cash, stock and restricted stock units) in February 2014; because Facebook's stock rose before closing, the completed deal in October 2014 was valued at roughly $22 billion.
Structure: Mixed cash-and-stock, friendly, plus a large RSU retention pool for WhatsApp's roughly 50 employees.

Value: $1.65 billion, all-stock, announced and closed October–November 2006.

The thesis: Google said YouTube's video-sharing scale and traffic complemented its search and advertising business, and that combining YouTube's audience with Google's ad-serving technology would resolve YouTube's monetization problem and bandwidth costs.

Google – DoubleClick (2007–2008)
Value: $3.1 billion cash, announced April 2007, closed March 2008 after extended US FTC and European Commission antitrust review.
The thesis: Google said DoubleClick's ad-serving and display-advertising technology would extend its dominance from search advertising into the broader display and publisher ad-tech stack.

The thesis: Amazon said the deal gave it an immediate, dense network of physical grocery locations and a premium grocery brand, accelerating its push into physical retail and same-day grocery delivery.

Hewlett-Packard – Compaq (2001–2002)
Value: Announced at approximately $25 billion in an all-stock swap (0.6325 HP shares per Compaq share) in September 2001; by closing in May 2002, the decline in HP's stock price had reduced the deal's value to roughly $19 billion.
Structure: All-stock, technically friendly at the board level but fought publicly through one of the most famous proxy contests in corporate history.

HP Inc. – Xerox Holdings (attempted, 2019–2020; blocked/withdrawn)
Value: Xerox's initial unsolicited proposal in November 2019 valued HP at roughly $33.5 billion ($22 per share, cash and stock); after HP's board rejected it, Xerox escalated in February 2020 to a hostile tender offer of $24 per share, valuing HP at roughly $34–35 billion.

Dell – EMC Corporation (2015–2016)
Value: $67 billion, cash and tracking stock, announced October 2015, closed September 2016 — the largest technology acquisition in history at the time.
Structure: Cash-and-stock, friendly; EMC shareholders received $24.05 in cash per share plus a new tracking stock (later ticker DVMT) pegged to Dell's economic interest in the roughly 80%-owned, still publicly traded VMware — a structure chosen because a cash sale of VMware shares would have triggered a large tax liability.
